JAGATI-Environment & Disaster Resilience Initiatives (J-EDRI)

JAGATI-Environment & Disaster Resilience Initiatives (J-EDRI) is envisioned as an integrated, science-based and community-centred approach to strengthening environmental sustainability, natural resource management and disaster resilience. Recognizing the close relationship between geology, land, water, ecosystems, climate and human livelihoods, J-EDRI promotes the application of geosciences, spatial information and local knowledge in development planning. The initiative focuses on groundwater and soil resource management, disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation, geo-based planning, sustainable land use, responsible mining and ecological restoration. By combining scientific knowledge, geospatial tools and community participation, J-EDRI aims to develop Resilient Landscapes and Disaster-Prepared Communities that can manage environmental risks and promote sustainable development.

Key Components:

Geo-Based Rural Development Planning

Geo-Based Rural Development Planning Initiative promotes the use of geological, geographical and geospatial information for informed and sustainable rural development planning. The initiative supports participatory mapping and analysis of land, water, soil, natural resources, hazards and local infrastructure. By integrating scientific evidence with community priorities and indigenous knowledge, JAGATI aims to support better land-use planning, resource allocation and development decisions suited to local ecological conditions.

Disaster Risk Reduction & Climate Adaptation 

Disaster Risk Reduction & Climate Adaptation Initiative strengthens the capacity of vulnerable communities to understand, prepare for and respond to natural and climate-related hazards. The initiative promotes local risk assessment, disaster preparedness, early awareness, community-based planning and climate adaptation practices. By combining scientific information with local knowledge and institutional preparedness, JAGATI aims to reduce vulnerabilities and strengthen the resilience of communities, livelihoods and local ecosystems.

Sustainable Mining & Land Restoration 

Sustainable Mining & Land Restoration Initiative promotes responsible approaches to mining, environmental management and the restoration of degraded landscapes. The initiative focuses on understanding the environmental and social impacts of extractive activities while promoting land reclamation, ecological restoration, water management and sustainable livelihood opportunities for affected communities. Through research, community engagement and knowledge-based interventions, JAGATI aims to contribute to environmentally responsible resource use and the long-term restoration of mining-affected landscapes.

Community Environmental Monitoring 

Community Environmental Monitoring Initiative strengthens the capacity of communities to observe and understand changes in their local environment. The initiative encourages participatory monitoring of water resources, soil conditions, forests, biodiversity, land degradation and environmental risks. By combining community observations with scientific tools and data, JAGATI seeks to generate locally relevant evidence that can support environmental awareness, resource management and community-led action.

Climate & Environmental Risk Mapping 

Climate & Environmental Risk Mapping Initiative uses GIS, participatory mapping and scientific assessment to identify climate and environmental vulnerabilities at the community and landscape levels. The initiative supports the mapping of hazards, water resources, land degradation, ecological changes and vulnerable settlements. JAGATI aims to use this information to strengthen disaster preparedness, climate adaptation, natural resource management and evidence-based local development planning.

Nature-Based Solutions & Ecosystem Resilience 

Nature-Based Solutions & Ecosystem Resilience Initiative promotes the protection, restoration and sustainable management of ecosystems as a pathway to addressing environmental and climate challenges. The initiative supports approaches such as watershed restoration, agroforestry, soil and water conservation, biodiversity protection and ecological restoration. By strengthening ecosystem health and community stewardship, JAGATI aims to improve climate resilience, water security, livelihoods and environmental sustainability.

Environmental Education & Earth Awareness 

JAGATI Environmental Education & Earth Awareness Initiative promotes awareness and learning on geology, natural resources, climate change, biodiversity and environmental sustainability. The initiative engages students, youth, communities and local institutions through educational programmes, field-based learning and knowledge-sharing activities. By improving understanding of the relationship between people and the environment, JAGATI aims to encourage responsible environmental behaviour and develop a new generation of environmentally conscious community leaders.

Together, these initiatives position J-EDRI as a comprehensive platform for integrating environmental sustainability, natural resource management, climate adaptation and disaster resilience into community development, enabling rural and tribal communities to build safer, more informed and environmentally sustainable futures.
