JAGATI Rights, Institutions & Governance Initiatives (J-RIGI)
JAGATI-Rights, Institutions & Governance Initiatives (J-RIGI) is envisioned as an integrated, rights-based and community-led approach to strengthening democratic participation, accountable institutions and access to legal and development entitlements among rural, tribal and marginalized communities. Recognizing that sustainable development depends on informed citizens, responsive institutions and effective local governance, J-RIGI promotes participatory planning, awareness of rights, secure access to land and natural resources, convergence with government programmes and capacity building of local institutions. The initiative seeks to strengthen the ability of communities to participate meaningfully in decisions affecting their lives while supporting transparent, inclusive and accountable governance systems. Through capacity building, institutional strengthening and collective action, J-RIGI aims to develop Empowered Communities and Responsive Local Institutions that can promote inclusive, equitable and sustainable development.
Key Components:
Participatory Village Development Planning
Participatory Village Development Planning Initiative promotes community-led planning processes that enable people to identify their needs, priorities, resources and development aspirations. The initiative supports inclusive participation of women, youth, tribal communities and marginalized groups in preparing village development plans. By strengthening local planning capacities and linking community priorities with available development opportunities, JAGATI aims to promote transparent, need-based and sustainable development planning.
Forest & Land Rights
Forest & Land Rights Initiative supports awareness, capacity building and community processes related to forest and land rights, including the implementation of the Forest Rights Act (FRA). The initiative seeks to strengthen the understanding of individual and community rights, particularly among tribal and forest-dependent communities, while promoting responsible natural resource governance. JAGATI aims to support community institutions in strengthening rights-based development and sustainable management of land, forests and natural resources.
Government Convergence & Entitlements
Government Convergence & Entitlements Initiative works to improve awareness, access and linkages between communities and relevant government programmes, schemes and public services. The initiative supports households and community institutions in identifying appropriate development opportunities and strengthening coordination with government departments. By promoting convergence and informed access to entitlements, JAGATI aims to improve the effectiveness of public investments and ensure that vulnerable communities can benefit from available development and social protection programmes.
Capacity Building & Local Governance
Capacity Building & Local Governance Initiative focuses on strengthening the knowledge and capacities of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and other local governance structures. The initiative promotes participatory decision-making, inclusive planning, transparency, accountability and effective coordination with communities and development institutions. Through training, knowledge sharing and institutional support, JAGATI aims to strengthen responsive and capable local institutions that can effectively address community priorities and contribute to decentralized and sustainable development.
Citizenship, Rights & Legal Awareness
Citizenship, Rights & Legal Awareness Initiative promotes awareness among rural and marginalized communities about their constitutional, legal and social rights. The initiative seeks to improve access to information and strengthen people's ability to engage with institutions and public systems. Through awareness programmes, capacity building and community dialogue, JAGATI aims to promote informed citizenship, greater participation and improved access to justice and development opportunities.
Inclusive Governance & Social Accountability
Inclusive Governance & Social Accountability Initiative promotes transparency, accountability and meaningful community participation in local development processes. The initiative encourages citizens and community institutions to engage constructively with public systems, monitor development priorities and strengthen dialogue between communities and service providers. By promoting inclusive participation and social accountability, JAGATI seeks to contribute to more responsive governance and equitable development outcomes.
Together, these initiatives position J-RIGI as a comprehensive platform for advancing community rights, participatory planning, institutional strengthening, access to entitlements and accountable local governance, enabling rural and tribal communities to become informed citizens and active partners in shaping their own development.
