JAGATI-Livelihoods & Economic Development Initiatives (J-LEDI)

JAGATI-Livelihoods & Economic Development Initiatives (J-LEDI) is envisioned as an integrated and community-led approach to strengthening sustainable livelihoods, economic resilience and self-reliance among rural, tribal and marginalized communities. Recognizing that livelihoods are closely linked with natural resources, agriculture, skills, institutions, markets and entrepreneurship, J-LEDI promotes diversified and sustainable livelihood opportunities through climate-resilient agriculture, Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs), livestock, value addition, producer institutions and rural enterprises. The initiative focuses on strengthening farmers, women, youth and community institutions by improving their access to skills, technology, finance, markets and development opportunities. By combining traditional knowledge, local resources, innovation and enterprise development, J-LEDI aims to create Sustainable and Resilient Livelihood Communities (SRLC) where households and community institutions are empowered to build dignified, economically secure and environmentally sustainable futures.

Key Components:

Community Institutions & Rural Enterprise

Community Institutions & Rural Enterprise Initiative focuses on strengthening community-based economic institutions, including Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), Self-Help Groups (SHGs), producer groups and cooperatives. The initiative promotes collective production, aggregation, value addition, enterprise management and market engagement. By strengthening institutional capacities and supporting locally owned enterprises, JAGATI aims to improve the bargaining power, economic participation and long-term sustainability of rural producers, women entrepreneurs and marginalized communities.

Indigenous Livelihoods & Knowledge

Indigenous Livelihoods & Knowledge Initiative recognizes and promotes traditional livelihood practices, skills and knowledge of tribal and indigenous communities. The initiative supports the documentation, revival and strengthening of locally appropriate farming systems, forest-based livelihoods, crafts, traditional foods and natural resource practices. By combining indigenous knowledge with appropriate technology, research and market opportunities, JAGATI aims to create livelihood models that are culturally relevant, economically viable and environmentally sustainable.

Financial Inclusion & Community Enterprise

Financial Inclusion & Community Enterprise Initiative works to improve access to financial services, savings, credit, insurance and appropriate livelihood investments for rural and marginalized communities. The initiative strengthens financial literacy and the capacities of community institutions to manage collective resources and enterprises. By linking households and producer groups with formal financial systems and development opportunities, JAGATI aims to strengthen economic security, reduce financial vulnerability and enable sustainable investment in livelihoods and local enterprises.

Livestock & Integrated Farming

Livestock & Integrated Farming Initiative promotes diversified and resilient livelihood systems by integrating agriculture, livestock, poultry, fisheries and other locally appropriate activities. The initiative supports improved production practices, local breeds, animal health awareness, fodder development and better management of farm resources. By promoting integrated farming systems suited to local ecological conditions, JAGATI aims to reduce livelihood risks, improve household nutrition, generate additional income and strengthen the resilience of smallholder and tribal households.

Climate-Resilient Agriculture & Agroecology

Climate-Resilient Agriculture & Agroecology Initiative promotes sustainable and diversified farming systems that strengthen food security, household income and resilience to climate variability. The initiative supports the cultivation of millets, pulses, indigenous crops, horticulture and other locally suitable crops while encouraging agroecological practices, soil health management, water conservation and reduced dependence on external inputs. JAGATI aims to strengthen smallholder and tribal farmers through improved knowledge, farmer learning platforms, local resource management and sustainable production systems.

Skills & Entrepreneurship

Skills & Entrepreneurship Initiative aims to enhance livelihood opportunities for rural and tribal youth through skill development, mentoring, enterprise promotion and access to emerging economic opportunities. The initiative supports youth in developing locally relevant skills linked with agriculture, natural resources, services, digital technologies and green enterprises. By encouraging innovation, entrepreneurship and self-employment, JAGATI seeks to reduce economic vulnerability and migration while creating a new generation of confident and skilled rural entrepreneurs.

Value Addition & Market Linkages Initiative

Value Addition & Market Linkages Initiative supports rural producers and enterprises to move beyond primary production and access better economic opportunities. The initiative promotes processing, product development, packaging, branding, quality improvement and market connections for agricultural, forest-based and locally produced goods. By strengthening the entire value chain—from production to market—JAGATI aims to increase producers' incomes, create local employment and develop sustainable, competitive and community-owned enterprises.

Sustainable Migration & Rural Employment

Sustainable Migration & Rural Employment Initiative addresses livelihood insecurity and distress migration by strengthening local employment and income-generating opportunities. The initiative supports skills, enterprise development, sustainable agriculture, producer institutions and improved access to government programmes and employment opportunities. JAGATI also seeks to understand migration patterns and strengthen the capacities of vulnerable households to make informed livelihood decisions. The initiative aims to promote dignified local employment while supporting the economic security and well-being of migrant and vulnerable families.

Women's Economic Empowerment

Women's Economic Empowerment Initiative promotes women's financial independence, entrepreneurship and leadership through sustainable livelihood opportunities. The initiative strengthens women's Self-Help Groups and producer collectives while supporting skill development, financial literacy, access to entitlements, enterprise development and market participation. Special emphasis is placed on locally appropriate livelihood activities, value addition and green enterprises. Through this initiative, JAGATI seeks to enhance women's control over economic resources and strengthen their role in household and community decision-making.

Together, these initiatives position J-LEDI as a comprehensive platform for promoting sustainable livelihoods, economic empowerment, entrepreneurship and community resilience, ensuring that rural and tribal communities are not merely beneficiaries of development but active participants and leaders in shaping their own economic futures.
